Pam
was a chemical engineer at a biotech company.
She joined the company five years ago and
enjoyed the science she worked on. She quietly
accomplished her goals and moved projects
along, especially when she worked alone.
What prompted Pam’s call to My
Work Coach
was an “opportunity” her manager
encouraged her to take. She was being asked
to lead a project team. Pam knew how she worked
when she was on a team: “just tell me
what you need and I’ll get it finished.”
was her motto. She thought everyone on a team
worked the same way. She accepted the role
because she assumed she just needed to aggregate
the results of all team members and put a
report together. She met with the project
sponsor, understood the project scope, accepted
the list of resources she would be able to
use and set up her first meeting with her
team.
According to Pam, “The meeting turned
out to be a total disaster. Some people told
her they were already working full time on
other projects, others seemed enthusiastic
about the assignment but didn’t have
a clue about what to do.” In desperation,
she called My
Work Coach
at the urging of her friend who had used our
services before. Our coaches assured her we
would be able to help and set up phone meetings
with Pam, assigning her preparation reading
and work to accomplish between meetings.
Together Pam and her coach explored the people
side of managing a project including mastery
of team building and team management techniques.
It didn’t take Pam long to recognize
there was a lot more involved in managing
the critical path, budget and resources for
a project beside aggregating the results.
Within six months, Pam delivered the project
on time and budget but with a whole new appreciation
of what it really takes to manage a project.
Pam has decided to accept future challenges
of becoming a project manager. She has learned
to enjoy mentoring new scientists assigned
to her projects. Her new challenge is corporate
politics!
